What makes solar panels work

Many tiny ‘solar cells’ make up solar panels for houses. These cells contain light-absorbing units that excite the electrons within the solar cell, generating an electric charge. The charged particles travel down into your home as an electric current to power your electrical devices.

A solar cell, like any other battery, requires a certain number of cells to function. A single solar cell can only produce about 0.5 volts on its own, so you’ll need a lot of them all operating at the same time to generate enough electricity. In layman’s terms, it takes 12 cells to charge a phone and a large solar array (many solar panels) to power your house in practical terms.

The science

Solar cells are extremely smart devices. In just a few years, this technology might be the world’s primary source of renewable energy using sunlight, basic atomic laws, and the Photovoltaic Effect.

In very simple terms, the sun is a colossal fusion reactor that releases enormous amounts of light energy into space. The light energy (particularly the “photons”) absorbed by the solar panel causes the electrons in a semiconductor to become excited. The electrons break away from their atoms and travel along metal conducting “fingers” and “busbars” of the solar panel as an electric current. This is referred to as the Photovoltaic Effect, which gives rise to the term solar PV.

The solar panel then absorbs the energy from the sun and converts it into usable alternating current, which is sent through an inverter to become direct current (DC) before being used to power your electrical appliances.


Solar panels are composed of cells, just like our own bodies. A semiconductor is a substance that generates an electrical current when exposed to light, and it’s the major component in a solar cell. Semiconductors, as the name indicates, have the ability to pass electricity between an insulator and a conductor.

The most frequent semiconducting material in commercial solar cells is silicon. It’s also one of the most plentiful elements on earth, but it must be doped before it’s usable. The term “doping” refers to the addition of other components to a silicon crystal, causing it to become intentionally unbalanced in terms of electrons.

Two types of semiconductors

  • The concentration of electrons in an N-type semiconductor makes it negatively charged. Boron is a common addition to create N-type semiconductors.
  • A P-type semiconductor is positively charged because it lacks enough electrons. Elements such as boron are commonly used to form P-type semiconductors.

The electrons in doped semiconductors are moving constantly, retreating from negatively charged areas into positively charged regions or “holes” where there is a lack of electrons, as opposed to the permanently fixed atoms that make up other stable elements.

After that, the two types of negatively charged semiconductors are placed one on top of the other, and this is referred to as the P-N junction. It’s because of this junction’s nature – the opposing charges being stacked together – that standard random electron-and-hole movement occurs in a single unidirectional flow, generating a current.

Solar panels, like any other solar technology, are difficult to estimate in terms of output. Solar panels have a wide range of factors that influence their performance, including sunlight levels, installation, and type of solar panel selected.
